Defending champion Novak Djokovic came through a tight opening set against Spaniard Albert Montanes before advancing with a 7-6(5), 6-0 victory on a rain-hit Tuesday at Internazionali BNL d’Italia, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament in Rome.
Montanes held his own with the World No. 3 through the first set as both players capitalised on two of their break point chances, but came up short in the tie-break. Similar to his three-set win over the 33rd-ranked Montanes two weeks ago at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo, Djokovic then blanked his opponent in the decisive set, limiting the Spaniard to just four points on serve.
The 21-year-old Djokovic is looking to reach his third straight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final after runner-up finishes at Miami (l. to Murray) and Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal). The Serbian won the Rome title last year with victory over Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka in the final.
